Drawer Construction

Introduction

Get introduction to class from Mr. Lust. Take attendance of the class; tell them about my self. Student teacher from UBC doing my practice teaching for the next two weeks here at Stanley Humphries. I will be back in January to teach for 13 weeks but you will be in other classes by then unless you want to take some more technology classes. I was a custom furnituremaker for 10 years so you can ask me any questions you want about your projects and I will help you. Mr. Lust will be in and out of the class but while he is gone I will be in charge so if you get out of line and he is not here I have permission to feed you through the planer. Ok if everyone wants to look over at the board I am going to give a short demonstration on drawer construction and then you can get back to work on your projects.

Objectives

At the end of this lesson the students will be able to:

Lesson Strategy

Tell the students there is two main types of drawers one with a false front that gets placed on the drawer box after it is installed in the cabinet, the other is a drawer that has a front that is part of the drawer box. – Draw examples of each.

Give main differences in the construction and where you would find them.

We will be making the drawer box separately from the drawer face.

*Ask if anyone knows any joints that can be used to make the drawer box strong. * E.g. Butt joint, lap joint, Rabbet joint, Dovetail joint, mitre joint, Lock joint.

Run through the hand out and have the students draw the samples of the joints

I will give the choice of two: Rabbet and Lock for the drawers you will be making.

There are also two different styles of mounting the drawer in the cabinet. Either with roller hardware or with wooden slides.

Ok I’m sure that every one wants to get back to work so I will leave the drawer joint demonstrations for later in the class or maybe tomorrow.

Questions/Conclusion:

So does anyone have any questions about what type of joints they are suppose to make on their drawer box?

What style drawer construction are you going to make? What are the advantages of making the drawers in this way? What are the two types of joints we are going to make the drawers with? Why are these joints best?
