Cutting a Tapered Leg on the Jointer
Introduction
Good morning students before we get started on our projects today I will be showing a demonstration on how to cut a tapered leg on the jointer. In making the project that we are working on I have given you several different options so that you can customize your table. One of these options is to put a taper on the legs.
Objectives
After this lesson the student will be able to:
Lesson Strategy
Introduce the subject and tell the students we will get to work after the demo.
Ask the students what techniques could be used to do the taper.
When one student mentions the hand plane tell story about the famous night school class
Relate the use of different machines back to lesson on cutting and types of blades.
Go into the importance of the amount of stock to be removed and set the jointer to that depth. Reminder of the safety demo done on the jointer before and ask how do I cut off ½" if I can’t set jointer deeper than 1/8".
Describe layout procedure
Show the procedure of how to set the wood down on the revolving cutter on the whiteboard first.
Then demonstrate on the jointer itself.

Jointer, Table leg before and after taper
Procedure
Set depth of cut
Set the stop block
Turn on the jointer
Take leg in right hand and rest the toe against the stop block, make sure it is resting up against the fence
Use your left hand to move the guard out of the way only enough to allow the leg to drop on the blade.
Set the leg down on the blade slowly when it engages the wood there will be a slight jolt – expect this.
Let the guard close back over the exposed blade
Transfer your left hand to the leg and pick up the push stick with your right hand.
The stock is always supported this way
Push the work through the jointer keeping pressure on the outfeed table.

Questions
Can any one think of a way to make the taper?
How do we take off more than an eight of an inch for the taper?
Review questions at end –What do we need to do before setting the distance of the stop block?
Does every one feel comfortable using this technique?
Conclusion
Wrap up by making sure every one is comfortable with this procedure and let them go back to work.
