Material: Alder 1"x 6"x 96"
Rough Dimensions: 22"x 17"x 1"
Finish Dimensions: 20"x 16"x ¾"
Read all instructions first and check off steps when completed
Obtain Permission from Instructor before using any machines
(All instructions in Italics involve student’s choice)
- Rough cut four pieces at 22" long. (Radial Arm Saw)
- Joint face side first then both edges of all pieces. (Jointer)
- Arrange pieces in correct grain orientation check for minimum width of 17" (Workbench)
- Glue pieces together making sure bottom is flush. (Glue station) Clamp time 30 minutes minimum
- Remove clamps, scrape excess glue from bottom and top of glue Joints. (Workbench)
- Surface plane to final thickness of ¾" minimum. (Thickness Planer)
- Joint one edge of panel straight (Jointer)
- Cut second edge to final width of 16". (Table Saw with Rip fence)
- Square-cut one end using ripped edge as reference (Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
- Cut to final length of 20" (Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
- Route edges to suit with good side down End grain first
(Table Router)
- Machine sand face up to 180 grit (Orbital Sander at Workbench)
- Sand edges lightly (Edge Sander)
- Hand sand complete top to 220 grit (Workbench)
Procedure for making table legs
Material: Alder 2"x 4"x 96"
Rough dimensions: 22"x 1-3/4"x 1-3/4"
Finished dimensions: 19-1/4"x 1-1/2"x 1-1/2"
Read all instructions first and check off steps when completed
Obtain Permission from Instructor before using any machines
(All instructions in Italics involve student’s choice)
- Rough cut 4 pieces to length 22" (Radial Arm Saw)
- Cut all four pieces to rough width 1-3/4" (Band Saw with rip fence)
- Joint face side flat and one edge square to face side. Set jointer to light cut (Jointer)
- Surface other two sides’ parallel to face sides. (Thickness Planer)
- Square one end of all pieces. Check cut to make sure cross-cut slide is accurate. (Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
- Set stop block on jig to finished length and cut all pieces to finished length.(Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
7. (a) Route desired edge along one edge of all legs. (Router Table)
7. (b) For tapered leg see procedure sheet for tapered leg
8. Layout marks for location of biscuit joints. (Work bench)
- Mark surface to be cut
- Layout centerline 1-1/2"from top of leg
- Square around all four edges
- Have instructor check layout
9. Cut biscuit slots in two sides of all legs. (Biscuit Joiner at Workbench)
10. Machine sand all surfaces (Edge Sander)
11. Hand sand all surfaces from 80 grit up to 120 grit. Break all edges (Workbench)
Procedure for making table skirts
Material: Alder 1"x 4"x 96"
Rough dimensions: 2 @ 17"x 4"x 1" 2 @ 14"x 4"x 1"
Finished dimensions: 2@ 15"x 3"x ¾" 2 @ 11" x 3"x ¾"
Read all instructions first and check off steps when completed
Obtain Permission from Instructor before using any machines
(All instructions in Italics involve student’s choice)
- Cut to rough length of 2@ 17" and 2@ 14" (Radial Arm Saw)
- Joint face side and face edge of all pieces (Jointer)
- Cut to final width of 3" making sure face side is down and face edge is along fence. (Table Saw with rip fence)
- Surface plane to final thickness of ¾". (Thickness Planer)
- Square cut one end of all pieces check for square(Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
- Cut to final length, making sure all other steps are done first.(Table Saw with cross-cut slide)
- Design and layout curve if desired.
(Workbench)
- Cut out pattern on bottom of skirt using techniques shown.
(Bandsaw)
- Machine sand curves smooth and symmetrical (Edge Sander or Spindle Sander)
- Hand sand all surfaces from 80 grit up to 120 grit. Break all edges (Workbench)
General Procedure for table glue-up & assembly
Dry fit all biscuit joints and check fit and final location of parts
Number matching parts to be glued
Disassemble table frame
Apply glue to biscuits and slots for 2 sets of table ends – 2 legs with one short skirt each. Be sure of part numbers and check for position of other slots.
Re-assemble both table end sets
Clamp across legs to align and hold parts in place – leave in clamps 30 minuets
Remove clamps
Apply glue to biscuits, long skirt slots and remaining slots in legs
Assemble completed end frames to long skirts
Clamp across legs to align and hold parts – check for square with tape measure – leave in clamps for 30 minuets
Remove clamps
Remove any semi-hard glue around joint with chisel
Install cleats to inside top edge of skirt – 1/8 down from top edge
Flip top upside down on clean safe surface
Flip frame over and locate on top – 1" overhang from leg to top edge all around the table top
Screw down one corner recheck overhang screw rest of corners using 1 ¼" # 8 screws
